Every Grandmaster Tracks Their Moves
Document Your Wins to Build a Value Portfolio
You need to be the CEO of your own career, whether you are an early career professional, individual contributor, leader, or executive. Part of that responsibility is keeping track of the measurables and metrics for the work you’ve done. Some professionals think, or even expect, their boss or leader to remember everything that they’ve accomplished in the last 3, 6, or 12 months. Expecting someone else to track your career contributions is a fast track to being overlooked for promotions or under-compensated during raise discussions.
What Documenting Your Wins Actually Means
Documenting wins is important, but what does it actually mean? Our goal is to move away from vague descriptions about your role/job, and focusing on data-backed achievements or accomplishments that hiring managers and executives will see immense value in. It’s important to regularly track the tasks, projects, and goals that you are working on in your career. Let’s explore different metrics that can be valuable.
One of my favorite metrics are what can be considered relational or reputational. These revolve all around the people you work with. Sometimes this can be formal, in the form of recognition via awards or honors earned at work. Another example could be praise and thank you emails or letters from colleagues, clients, or leadership. Keep and collect these - have a folder in your email inbox that you can keep these (print out copies if helpful). Even notes about positive feedback on the work should be kept.
Another metric to track and update are system or operational. These metrics revolve around problems, initiatives, and solutions. Focus on capturing the before and after snapshots of these projects, which will make your impact and value undeniable. These projects could be cross-departmental or cross-functional, or they could deal with leadership, crisis situations, or high value problems.
The final metric is quanitative in nature. These metrics clearly illustrate the numbers involved in the work you do. Think about how you’ve been able to increase revenue generated from your work, whether that is directly related to your job or not. On the opposite side, did you reduce costs, spending, or time spent on a process? These are high value impacts that should be leveraged throughout your career. The importance of this third metric is highlighting impact with ACTUAL NUMBERS!
Converting Data into Leverage
Having a raw list of achievements in a notebook is a solid start, but data sitting on a page won't get you promoted or land you a higher income job offer on its own. The real magic happens when you translate raw activity into a strategic narrative—converting everyday tasks into quantifiable business ROI that commands authority.
When you can clearly articulate how your leadership directly influenced revenue growth, operational efficiency, or risk mitigation, you eliminate subjective opinions from the room. Your value becomes mathematical, objective, and impossible to ignore.
Value Sheet System - Building Habits
As with many of the Winning Move Careers blogs, we want to build habits to improve your career trajectory! The value sheet system will build upon itself over the course of time, and it is important to follow each step of the process.
The first step of this value sheet system is your weekly habit. Block of time at the end of each of your work weeks to document. If you work a traditional shift (M-F, 8-5), hold that 4 pm or 4:30 pm window to write down 2-3 bullet points of things that you accomplished that week.
Step two adds a monthly habit to those weekly accomplishment journals. At the end of each month, reflect on each week’s bullet points, and add numbers or other metrics to those logs. You have time and hindsight to now add individual and team impact to each of those accomplishments!
Finally, regularly update your resume and a master document with these big picture wins and individual accomplishments. Don’t forget to update your LinkedIn profile quarterly!
